Drugs and Medical Devices Currently Under Review

Hernia Mesh

Hernia mesh products are used to repair hernias, or tears, in the abdominal wall. Some of these products are failing at a very high rate. Failures can cause severe pain, organ damage, infection and death. They often require revision surgeries to remove the mesh patch.

IVC Filters

IVC filters are small wire devices placed in patients to help with blood clots. Retrievable IVC filters began being used in 2003. Unfortunately, many of these filters can move inside the body or break apart and lead to serious injuries or death. A scan is often needed to determine whether an IVC filter has moved or broke as you may not experience any symptoms until it is too late. We can assist you in having a scan completed.

Talcum Powder & Ovarian Cancer

Studies have linked ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer and mesothelioma to the prolonged use of talcum powder products such as Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower.

RoundUp

Prolonged exposure to the weed killer RoundUp has been linked to various forms of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Other products with the same risks include Ranger Pro and Honcho. Individuals at the most risk of harm from these products are farm workers, nursery employees, garden center employees, landscapers and gardeners.

Opioid Birth Defects

The use of opioids during pregnancy can result in infants being born with a condition called neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Infants with NAS can suffer from painful symptoms and can have serious long-term complications. If you are the guardian of a child that was born with NAS, and their mother took opioids during pregnancy, you may be able to file a claim on behalf of the child.

Taxotere

Taxotere is a chemotherapy drug often used in the treatment of breast cancer. It is alleged that the manufacturer of Taxotere failed to inform the FDA and others that the drug can lead to permanent hair loss. Temporary hair loss can occur during chemotherapy but users of Taxotere have experienced permanent loss of hair.

Metal-On-Metal Hip Replacements

Friction between the metal surfaces of the hip implant can cause tiny fragments of metal to flake off and enter the body and bloodstream. Persons with these implants can experience severe pain, swelling, tissue or bone death and may require additional surgeries.

Knee Replacements

Research shows that certain types of bone cement used during knee replacement surgeries are prone to failure. This can result in severe pain, infection, further damage to the knee, and loosening of the replacement and may require revision surgeries.

Invokana/Farxiga/Jardiance

These drugs and others, known as SGLT2 inhibitors, are used to treat Type 2 diabetes. They have been linked to serious and life-threatening infections in the genital area.

Nexium/Prilosec/Prevacid

These medications and others are proton pump inhibitors (PPI) and often taken for heartburn and acid reflux. The medications may cause an increased risk of kidney disease and renal failure that could lead to permanent kidney failure and necessitate a kidney transplant.

Zostavax (Shingles Vaccine)

This vaccine is usually given to patients 50 years and older. Zostavax uses a weakened form of the shingles virus to activate the immune system. Unfortunately, it only works in approximately 50% of the people who take it, and in people with a weakened immune system, it may actually cause the person to get shingles. It has also been linked to eye disorders (necrotizing retinitis) that may lead to blindness. Some plaintiffs allege that Zostavax has caused hearing loss, paralysis, brain damage, fatal liver failure and other serious medical conditions.

Gadolinium (Used During MRIs)

Gadolinium is a contrast agent used during MRIs. People who have been given Gadolinium prior to their MRI may experience intense burning of the skin, intense pain in bones, joints, tendons and ligaments, mental confusion, tingling or numbness in the skin, severe and persistent headaches, kidney damage, and skin that appears spongy or rubbery. These are all symptoms of Gadolinium Deposition Disease. The drug has also been associated with Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), which causes the skin to harden and causes a person’s joints to contract, resulting in chronic pain and loss of mobility. The areas most commonly affected are between the ankles and the thighs, and the wrists and upper arms. Symptoms develop slowly over a period of a few weeks to a few months.

Asbestos & Mesothelioma

This aggressive cancer caused by asbestos exposure affects the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen. Many factory and shipyard workers are affected by this disease. The disease has also been found in the family members of shipyard workers who are exposed to asbestos through contact with the worker or his/her clothing.

Benzene

Along the Alabama and Mississippi coast, we have numerous manufacturing, chemical, petroleum and paper plants that routinely use chemicals that contain Benzene, a known cancer-causing agent. Workers can be exposed to Benzene by inhalation or by absorbing it through their skin. Road construction workers and dry-cleaning employees are often exposed to Benzene as well. Exposure to Benzene has been linked to Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), lymphomas and aplastic anemia.
